High risk!! Zona de Derrumbes!!

Not much of a real Ride Report, but I figured it was worth sharing, anyway.

It was a great afternoon today to get out the Speed Triple and explore.

In the Ensenada area theyíre building a new road, called the Libramiento. Itís going to be a great road to connect highway 1 with highway 3. When itís complete, it will give trucks a way to get from one to the other without going through the city. And it was almost done. Almost.

Years ago, as it was nearing the 90% completion mark, a landslide happened. Not just one. More than one. And this new pristine road was no longer passable. It needs lots of engineering that was perhaps unforeseen when the road was initially built.

Thereís a second half of this project that will eventually re-connect on the South side of town, but thatís years away. The Libramiento is the top yellow line. You can see just how useful this road will eventually become.

The caution signs are, yes, all in Spanish. I figure you will either get it, or have Google Translate to help if you need a translation.

As you propose traveling this road, this is given to you as food-for-thought:

Hereís the first real sign that things are beginning to not go well. Thereís a road under those boulders.

Hereís another hint:

My helpful friend asks: "Where are you going?". I answered, "Nowhere, really. Just curious." He ponders that for a moment, and moves a barrel. We proceed onward.

Rapidly becomes this.

Another hint of things to come.

You aren't passing here with much short of a backhoe. Speedy and I called it quits and turned around.

Rusty, let this be a lesson. Mexico is just too risky.

30 years ago I did that kind of thing in Mexico all the time. The Mexican people were friendly, helpful, and would even open their doors to a white teenager who didn't speak a word of Spanish with a invitation for dinner. Great people.
Nowadays I won't hang out near the border because of a realistic fear of being kidnapped or shot. Read the local papers, its happening, people being grabbed off the streets, taken across the border and ransomed back. No family or money for that in my life.
But I sure would love to ride that unfinished and empty road!

Yeah, uhhh. I live here and the threat isn’t what the papers and news make it seem to be.

But I’m not trying to convince you of anything. Enjoy the photos.

Hey... just because you got drugged and thrown in the back of a produce van once, doesn't mean I'd do it again to you....

As with most countries...there are places to be and places to NOT be.

For instance...Chicago.

Here's an update. Ran the road again today, it's amazing what a few months does.

First real stop:

Looking over the city:

It wouldn't be Mexico without this:

Here's the end. About 2 km short of being finished.
